Timing matters when you visit the transition forest of Carara National Park. Since birds and mammals are most active before the heat of the day, an early start is critical. Choosing the right month also determines which trails remain open.

What is the best time of day to visit Carara National Park?

The best time of day to visit is right when the gates open at 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM, depending on the season.

Wildlife activity drops significantly as the temperature rises. From 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM, the forest is cooler. This is your best window to spot the park's famous Scarlet Macaws. The 150 to 200 macaws often fly over the canopy early in the day. Arriving early also means you finish walking the main trails before the afternoon heat.

What is the best season to visit Carara National Park?

The dry season, from December through April, is the best time to go.

During these months, you will encounter far less mud on the paths. The park is a transition zone between tropical dry and humid forests. When you visit in the dry season, all trails are normally fully accessible. The weather stays mostly clear, making it easier to walk the 2 to 4 hours needed to cover the main ranger station trails.

Does the park close during the rainy season?

The park stays open year-round, but specific sections close due to severe flooding.

The Laguna Meandrica trail is a 4.5 km route located 2 km away from the main station. It runs parallel to the Rio Grande de Tarcoles. Heavy rains cause the river to flood the trail. Expect this specific path to be closed from late August to mid-November.

Are the Scarlet Macaws visible year-round?

Yes, you can spot Scarlet Macaws throughout the year.

Carara protects Costa Rica's largest remaining wild population of these birds. While they live in the park all year, the time of day matters more than the month. Early mornings provide the best viewing opportunities. Hiring a guide with a spotting scope makes it much easier to see them high in the canopy.

Do park opening hours change by season?

Yes, the gates open one hour later during the wet season.

From December to April, the park operates from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. From May to November, the park opens from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Since early morning is the prime time for birding among the 430 identified species, the 7:00 AM entry in the dry season is highly beneficial.

How does weather affect the main trails?

Rain makes the unpaved trails slippery and increases mosquito activity.

The Universal Access Trail is a 1.2 km loop that is fully paved. Weather does not impact the surface of this trail. The other three trails at the main ranger station are natural dirt paths. During the wet season, you will need sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Bring an eco-friendly mosquito repellent, as bugs multiply after heavy rains.
